Diagnosing Bladder Cancer

Because bladder cancer is highly treatable in the early stages of the disease, it’s important to see your doctor if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms. Colorado Urology’s physicians are experienced in the latest diagnostic techniques that can identify bladder cancer quickly and accurately. Your doctor will first perform a thorough history and physical exam.

Other tests you may receive include:
  • Urine Cytology – Examining urine cells under the microscope.
  • CT Urography – Special x-rays that include contrast dye, to view the kidneys, bladder and connecting tubes.
  • Cystoscopy – Involves inserting a thin scope into the urethra to view it and the bladder; if a mass is seen, a biopsy may be performed at that time or during more formal treatment.
  • Fluorescence in Situ Hybridization (FISH) – A urine test that looks for chromosomal abnormalities and may provide early detection of urothelial carcinoma.
  • Tumor Markers (Biomarkers) – Along with other diagnostic tests, tumor markers can aid in the diagnosis of bladder cancer, guide treatment decisions, and help to monitor treatments.
